Ultra-high speed connectivity to cover more than half of S'pore by 2012

SINGAPORE: More than half of Singapore homes and offices are expected to have ultra-high speed broadband access by 2012.

That's a requirement of the bid for what is called Singapore's Next Generation National Broadband Network, which was thrown open on Tuesday.

Ultra-high speed of up to 1 gigabit per second - or 10 times faster than the maximum speed currently available on broadband.

That's the connectivity speed the Next Generation National Broadband Network will have and which the next generation will certainly appreciate.

Three out of four homes in Singapore already have broadband access, with an increasing number opting for wider bandwidth.

And, the benefits of this ultra-high speed network will pervade all areas of life - from online trading to e-learning.

"These may include close to real-life high-definition video conferencing, high-speed online transactions and graphics-based data visualisation. For example, the healthcare sector will be able to process and share high volume and complex medical data, including tele-radiology and MRI, to provide more timely and better medical care to patients," said Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications & The Arts.

The government will provide grants of up to $750 million to the company or consortium which wins the bid to build the island-wide infrastructure.

The successful bidder will have to ensure that the ultra-high speed network will be available to more than 50% of homes and offices in Singapore by 2012.

It will also be held to the wholesale prices it sets out in its bid.

That's one of the parameters to ensure an open market for what would be a natural monopoly.

Potential bidders include SingTel, StarHub and M1.

M1 has partnered Hong Kong Broadband Network to bid as a consortium.

Malaysian Renouncing Citizenship

Renouncing citizenship: Chinese top the list

Chinese Malaysians record the highest number of those who have renounced their citizenship, followed by the Malays and Indians, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

The Home Ministry's parliamentary secretary, Abdul Rahman Ibrahim, said 14,316 Chinese (87%) have surrendered their citizenship, compared to 1,098 Malays (6.6%), 822 Indians (5%) and 238 (1.4%) others from 2000 to 2006.

He also explained that 106,000 people have renounced citizenship since Independence in 1957.

Abdul Rahman said these Malaysians had applied for citizenship to India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Japan, Canada and Indonesia.

"(Others) have applied to the UK and US, Taiwan, Thailand, Germany, New Zealand, France, Austria, Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, Brunei, Finland and Jordan," he said.

Living condition

As to why so many Malaysians have opted to leave for other countries, he replied: "The main reason is the (quality of life) in those countries."

"They also consider the working environment, such as better opportunities and better pay. And some consider education for their children as a reason to apply for a citizenship in a particular country," he said.

Abdul Rahman was replying Mohamed Aziz (BN-Sri Gading) who asked for a breakdown of the figures according to race and the country of destination.

On a related matter, Abdul Rahman said the government takes into consideration three things before stripping a person of citizenship.

"Firstly, we see if the person holds citizenship in another country. Secondly, we see if the person has voted in that country's elections. And lastly, we (check) if the person holds a foreign passport," he said.

He explained that revoking citizenship can be implemented under Article 24(2) and 3(a) of the Federal Constitution.

Hong Kong, the world's most expensive city for rental accommodation according to new ECA International survey - 22 May 2007

Five of the top 10 most costly cities to rent globally are in Asia

Hong Kong is the world's most expensive city to rent accommodation and Asia accounts for five of the world's top ten most costly cities, according to a survey conducted by ECA International, the world's leading knowledge and solutions provider for international HR professionals.

Undertaken annually, ECA’s Accommodation Survey compares rental prices in 92 locations worldwide. The survey data is used in ECA’s Accommodation Reports, which are used by ECA Member companies to calculate housing policy and allowances for their internationally mobile staff.

"Comparing the cost of renting an unfurnished three bedroom apartment, ECA’s data shows that Hong Kong is by far the most expensive city, with an apartment in a popular expatriate area costing approximately US$8,592 per month on average," said Lee Quane, General Manager of ECA in Hong Kong. "That's 17 per cent more expensive than the average rental price in Tokyo, which ranked second in the survey, and 150 per cent more expensive than 15th placed Singapore."

High rental prices in the SAR can be attributed to a number of factors, including the lack of space putting a high premium on land and government intervention, as well as an increasing demand for high-end developments as many financial firms strengthen their presence within the city.

“What’s more, the survey shows that rental prices are rising – up 10% from 2005,“ comments Quane. “And with prices in Tokyo increasing by just 1% year on year, the gap between Asia’s two most expensive cities to rent is actually widening.”

Five of the top 10 most expensive locations in the world are in Asia, with Seoul (5th), Mumbai (7th) and Shanghai (8th) joining Hong Kong and Tokyo . New York, Moscow, London, Caracas and Paris make up the 10 most expensive cities globally to rent a three bedroom apartment.

High rental prices in Tokyo, New York, Seoul, Moscow, London and Paris largely reflect high living costs in these locations, while Mumbai, Shanghai and Beijing suffer from a shortage of modern, well equipped properties that meet expatriate standards, pushing prices up for those properties that do. Caracas makes the top ten as expatriates need to live in high security compounds because it is a very dangerous place to live.

According to the survey, Nairobi is the cheapest city in the world to rent a three bedroom apartment, with the average monthly rent nearly eight times cheaper than the equivalent in Hong Kong. Charlotte, Atlanta and Dallas in the US and Ankara make up the bottom five cheapest cities to rent.

Ten year trends

Comparing 57 locations worldwide for the past 10 years, rental prices have increased by 22% on average. However, Hong Kong, along with a number of other locations in Asia and worldwide, has actually seen a decrease in rental prices over this period, with the average price of renting a three bedroom apartment falling 10 per cent between 1996 and 2006.

“In 1996 Hong Kong’s residential rental market was booming," comments Quane. “However, government attempts to cool the market by boosting supply, coupled with the Asian Financial Crisis and dot-com crash, resulted in a steady fall in rental prices. In recent years, however, a recovering economy and higher demand for high-end accommodation are driving rental prices up back toward the peak of ten years ago, ” Quane adds.

Although rental prices in Beijing and Shanghai are amongst the highest in the world, they are also cheaper than ten years ago. The average cost of renting a three bedroom apartment is 50% cheaper in Beijing than 10 years ago, while in Shanghai they are now 40% less costly.

“Ten years ago prices in Beijing and Shanghai were artificially inflated due to a severe lack of supply, which meant that foreigners had to live in foreign approved residences,” explains Quane. “Today, however, foreigners are allowed to live wherever they like and more and more expatriate-standard properties are being built,” adds Quane.

Some of the most significant increases in recent years have been in the Middle East, with rental prices in Doha and Dubai rising by approximately 130% and 100%, respectively, since 1996. These locations are positioning themselves as premium business centres and luxury cities, and as such have seen many new very high standard properties erected, driving up the average rental price.

BMW has finally unveiled its much-anticipated X6 coupe-crossover, which it calls a "Sport Activity Coupe." BMW will be the first automaker to bring such an SUV to market, although other automakers are said to be planning similar coupe-like utility vehicles.

The X6 was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt. Like the M3, it is being billed as concept, but a nearly identical production vehicle is expected to arrive in dealerships in early 2008.

BMW design chief Chris Bangle said "a good concept realizes itself in a short amount of time." The X6, no doubt, falls under this category in BMW's mind.

Of course, we don't need Bangle's statement as proof of production ambitions for the X6. For months, spies have photographed the X6 undergoing extensive real-world testing.

Exterior designer Pierre Leclercq says the X6 is "a real sports car," true to BMW's tradition. "There's nothing like this on the market right now."

Daring design

As recent photos show, the X6 is anything but a conservative design.

The X6's roofline begins arching downward after the B-pillar and continues plunging right to the X6's rising waistline. As a result, second-row headroom and rear cargo volume are both compromised.

The new X6 will be longer and lower than the new X5, seating only four. But what the sporty X6 loses in seating and storage, it is expected gain in performance.

The X6 is, by far, the most extreme example of a "crossover-coupe" to date. Mercedes and Land Rover are both rumored to be planning a similar vehicles, but no plans have been announced.

X6 to be BMW's first hybrid

BMW also debuted a hybrid version of its X6 Concept. Visually the hybrid is identical to the regular X6 but BMW claims that the hybrid is 20% more fuel-efficient. Various reports indicate the X6 will be BMW's first production car offered with the option of a hybrid powertrain.

Exterior design:

The powerful presence of the car’s body merges smoothly and harmoniously with the low-slung roof of the greenhouse. This flowing roofline is indeed a characteristic element of the coupé silhouette, just like the short front overhang, the long wheelbase and long rear overhang.
In its design, BMW Concept X6 expresses all the DNA so characteristic
of BMW X. The optical balance of the front and rear wheels clearly visible from the side bears convincing testimony to BMW’s intelligent xDrive
all-wheel-drive technology.
The second dominating element in the design of the body is the
clear orientation to the car’s wheels, muscular wheel arches and large wheels providing a particularly impressive look and sign of stability.
The exterior is characterised by exciting interaction of convex and concave surfaces.
The side contour line rising up dynamically to the rear and the growing distance between the shoulder and the sill-line as the car moves to the back generate a dynamic wedge shape.
The striking front view with clear focus on the car’s width bears out the expression so typical of a BMW X model. This powerful look is further enhanced by the extra-large BMW kidney grille serving as the air intake with robust slats, the headlights cut in a sharp profile, and clear accentuation of the side panels highlighting the flared contours of the wheel arches. The large air intakes, in turn, characterise the significant demand for cooling air in the engine, make the car look longer and underline its sporting character also from the front.
The engine compartment lid comes with clear contours subdivided by sharp lines tapering out towards the BMW kidney grille. The elegant look created in this way is also characterised by bumper elements finished in body colour with discreet plastic appliqués in the typical style of a BMW X model.
The unique design of the D-pillars expresses sheer power and stability, the innovative design of the rear lights emphasising the width of the
car. Positioned far to the outside, the exhaust tailpipes and horizontal lines of BMW Concept X6 accentuate the wide track of the car.
The dark paintwork standing out clearly form the chrome elements symbolises the sporting and technical character of BMW Concept X6, with sophisticated highlights being added by the sill trim at the side, the chrome-coloured slats, the foglamps with their special surrounds in the outer air intakes, as well as the chrome-plated tailpipes.
The underfloor protection front and rear is made of milled aluminium.
White direction indicator lines are integrated in the rear lights and the special night design of BMW Concept X6 is characterised by light bodies with a homogeneous light effect.

Stockholm, Sweden (AHN) - A 75-year-old lady in Karlstad, central Sweden has become the first person to surf Internet at a whooping speed of 40 gigabits-per-second. Sigbritt Lothberg is equipped with what is thought to be the fastest consumer broadband connection in the world.

Karlstad city officials confirmed that Lothberg's fiber-optic connection in Karlstad is believed to be the fastest residential uplink in the world while the average speed of Internet connection in United Kingdom is 8 Mbps.

Lotherberg can download a high-definition DVD film on her home computer in two seconds. It is thousands times faster than most residential connections.

Hafsteinn Jonsson, head of the Karlstad city network unit worked with Lothberg's son, Peter, an Internet wizard to install the connection. They wanted to showcase a new router system and see how it works over long distance fibre networks.

AP quotes Peter Lothberg, who works at Cisco as saying, the new modulation technique will allow transfer of data between two routers placed up to 1,240 miles apart, without any transponders in between. "We wanted to show that that there are no limitations to Internet speed," he said.

Meanwhile, Peter also added that his mother Sigbritt Lothberg is "a brand new Internet user," who had not used a computer before.

（吉隆坡30日訊）近來好事連連的IOI集團（IOICORP,1961,主板種植股），成功打破傳統上由官聯公司（GLC）壟斷的局面，以黑馬姿態，一口氣登上大馬交易所的龍頭寶座，崛起成為交易所市值最高的上市公司，並創下有史以來，首家華資上市公司登頂的紀錄。

由于受到原棕油價格瘋狂飆漲的激勵，加上積極擴充海內外種植版圖，IOI集團在近期獲得市場大力追捧，股價急速竄升，今天更攀上 7.90令吉，創下52週以來的最高水平。
這促使該公司身價暴漲，市值一路飆升至470億2965萬令吉的水平，在大馬交易所市值排名上，首度突破傳統上由官聯公司壟斷的局面，一口氣登上大馬交易所的龍頭寶座，成為交易所市值最大的上市公司。
這也是本地華資上市公司，有史以來首次登頂。
從過去的紀錄顯示，截至2006年杪，IOI集團的市值僅228億1750萬令吉，在大馬交易所排名第9，表現未見突出。
甚至在今年9月杪的排名中，IOI集團都還沒有資格，擠進前5大市值最高的上市公司。
然而，不過在短短一個月的時間內，該公司的市值突然暴漲，創下470億2965萬令吉的水平，其身價不僅比去年飆漲了超過一倍以上，更把傳統上穩坐市值最高寶座的兩大官聯公司，即馬銀行（Maybank）與國家能源（TENAGA）踩在腳下，登上龍頭寶座。
棕油價格飆漲,股價水漲船高
拉昔胡申研究分析員指出，原油價格飆漲，促使原棕油價格在近期大幅走高，而IOI集團的股價也跟著水漲船高，全面反映出原棕油價格在近期的強勁漲勢。
達證券分析員表示，他原本預測IOI集團在08年的原棕油平均價格為2400令吉。不過，他認為，以目前的趨勢，這樣的預測過于保守了。因此，分析員將原棕油價格預測，上修至2550令吉。
大眾銀行成市值第4大公司
分析員相信，在生物柴油與大豆油價格走勢的支撐下，原棕油價格在中短期內繼續看漲，而身為股票流通量最高的上市種植公司，IOI集團料將成為最大的受惠者。
該股最終以7.90令吉的全天候最高水平收盤，上揚40仙，成交量達1202萬7400股。
隨著IOI集團以黑馬姿態，崛起成為大馬交易所市值最高的上市公司后，馬股的市值排行榜也面臨一個重新洗牌的全新局面。傳統上由TMT 或TMTM，也就是國家能源、馬銀行、馬電訊以及MISC公司壟斷的局勢已不覆在。
取而代之的，是IOI集團、馬銀行、國家能源、大眾銀行以及土著聯昌。值得一提的是，大眾銀行的市值也在迅速增長，闊別一年后，再度躋身5大市值最高的上市公司。這意味著，2家華資上市公司成功突破官聯公司的壟斷局面，為大馬股市寫下新的一頁。

Four Seasons Centre is a mixed use development of over 2 million gsf including a Four Seasons hotel, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums, retail and parking. The tower's formal characteristics have been developed to complement the Petronas Towers and the overall skyline of Kuala Lumpur.

Complex site geometries have been distilled into a clear diagram to organize the circulation of pedestrians and vehicles throughout the site. Podium planning has been developed to support the different user groups that will live, work, and play at Four Season Centre. The new development will link both above and below grade to neighboring Kuala Lumpur City Centre retail properties.

VENUS Assets Sdn Bhd, a company controlled by tycoon Ong Beng Seng, will submit a development order application for its planned RM1 billion mixed development project in Kuala Lumpur, people familiar with the matter said yesterday.

The Venus project, known as Four Seasons Centre Kuala Lumpur, will be built on the existing open air carpark spread over 2.6 acres, situated between Menara Maxis and Wisma Central.

Venus Assets had acquired the land from Intan Sdn Bhd, a privately held company controlled by the family of the late billionaire Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat, for RM90 million in cash in October 2003.

The project will comprise the six-star Four Seasons Hotel and service apartment with retail shopping area covering 750,000 sq ft, and a 70-storey Four Seasons Condominium which will have 173 super luxury units.

Mail Money was told that prices have not been fixed yet but will be in excess of RM1,000 per sq ft.

Venus Assets is waiting for the building plans to be approved. This is expected to be finalised in the current quarter, Mail Money was told.

The company, however, hasn’t decided if it is going to undertake the construction job itself or to appoint a turnkey contractor.

The 59-year-old, Perak-born Ong controls Hotel Properties Ltd, a company listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange, which has hotel, property and retail investments worldwide.

His 70 per cent investment in Venus Assets is believed to be private in nature. His partner in the company is Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor.

Lim Goh Tong dies at 90
PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, founder and honorary life president of Genting Group, passed away at 11.20am Tuesday at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre.
The tycoon, who turned 90 in April this year, was renowned for his vision in transforming Genting Highlands from an unexplored hilltop to one of the world's most successful casino resorts.
The fifth child in a family of seven children, Lim migrated from China's Fujian province in 1937 at the age of 19 with only a small suitcase and US$175.
The idea of a hill resort was chanced upon by Lim amidst the crisp air of Cameron Highlands in 1964. Lim was then working on a hydro-electric power project at the popular hill resort, patronised mostly by British colonials seeking cool refuge from the tropical heat, when he foresaw a prosperous Malaysia of the future desiring a cool mountain holiday resort within the reach of all Malaysians.
To date, Genting Highlands Resort has five hotels and two apartment blocks at the hilltop and Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Country Resort.
The company, founded in 1965, has since expanded and diversified from its initial hotel and resort activities to plantations, properties, paper manufacturing, power generation, oil and gas, electronic commerce and information technology development under Genting Group.
According to Forbes Asia, the Genting Group founder was third richest in the country with a net worth of US$4.3bil (RM14.6bil).
Lim is survived by wife Puan Sri Lee Kim Hua, and their six children and 19 grandchildren.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index breaks 29,000, helped by China stocks

HONG KONG (XFN-ASIA) - The Hong Kong stock market's benchmark Hang Seng Index broke the 29,000 points level for the first time, before pulling back below that level, helped by strong gains in China financials, coal stocks and oil firms.

Liquidity inflows following China's expanded qualified domestic institutional investor (QDII) program boosted many H-shares, while select local property firms were up on expectations that their land holdings will be valued higher following the government's plans for major infrastructure projects.

Construction firms were sharply higher on the government's infrastructure development program.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang announced in his annual policy speech yesterday that the government intends to prioritise ten major infrastructure projects.

At 3 pm, the Hang Seng index was up 428.18 points or 1.5 pct at 28,997.51, off a low of 28,609.68 and a new all-time-high of 29,023.65.

Turnover was at 121.67 bln hkd.

The Hang Seng China Enterprises (otcbb: CSHEE.OB - news - people ) index was up 657.23 points or 3.59 pct at 18,943.15.

Honda has released details and full product images of the new 2008 Honda Accord sedan and coupe, but let’s look at the Accord sedan first as it is more relevant to our local market. The Honda Accord sedan in the US comes with 3 engine options - two 2.4 liter inline-4 i-VTEC units as well as a 3.5 liter V6 engine for the top of the line model.

The 2.4 liter engine is available in two stages of tune - a 177hp @ 6,500rpm, 218Nm @ 4,300rpm basic unit that has 7 more horsepower than the 2.4 liter in the current Accord as well as a tuned up 190hp at 7,000rpm variant with 220Nm of torque at 4,400rpm thanks to a reprogrammed ECU and a high-flow muffler with a variable valve silencer.

The V6 unit grows from 3.0 liter in the current Accord up to 3.5 liters and makes 268 horsepower at 6,200rpm and 336Nm of torque at 5,000rpm. This SOHC V6 engine is equipped with Variable Cylinder Management which allows the engine to operate on three, four or all six cylinders to help boost fuel economy or power as needed. The coupe has this same engine without the VCM - the reduced valvetrain weight improves low to mid-range power.

Once again the 2008 Honda Accord rides on a double wishbone front suspension at the front, enhancing the driving experience. In the US market, this new Honda Accord marks a few firsts for a USDM Accord - disc brakes on all wheels for all models, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) on all models, power lumbar support, auto-dimming inside mirror, compass, multi-line display CD/MP3 player, auxiliary-input jack and subwoofer. I sincerely hope the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) as standard on all models make it to Malaysia - when you pay over RM130,000 for a car I think safety features such as traction control are very important.

The interior space of the new 2008 Honda Accord has been improved so much that it is now classified as an EPA Large Sedan in the US market. Honda says the interior offers “equal” front and rear seating comfort for four adults - the rear passenger comfort level is no longer a hit and miss thing if the front passengers move the seats too far rearward. If you measure the growth in size from the exterior, the new 2008 Accord is 76mm longer than the previous model, 28mm wider and 22mm taller. Torsional rigidity has been improved by 20% thanks to the usage of 48% high-tensile steel, the highest by volume of any Honda Accord to date.

Aerodynamics have also been improved thanks to a new frame rail system which positions the frame rails inside the Accord’s body structure instead of underneath it, creating a nearly flat bottom to ruduce under-floor turbulence. The car is also more balance now in terms of weight distribution as the fuel tank has been moved lower and further forward.

It is not known at the moment when the new 2008 Honda Accord will be introduced in Malaysia, or whether these engine enhancements will be brought here or not as we usually carry the same engine specs as Thailand Accords, and one of the ways the new engine makes more power is because it has a higher compression ratio. Thailand fuel might not be able to handle that. A new Accord also usually means a new Honda Odyssey is coming soon, which is a lovely MPV.

Does a Darkened Google Really Save Electricity?

A new Web site, Blackle, aims to act as a starting point for eco-conscious Web searchers. The site, which serves as a front end for Google searches, reverses the color schemes of search-result pages so users see light-colored text on a black background. It’s a trick that, allegedly, cuts the energy consumption of computer monitors, and as of yesterday afternoon, Blackle claimed it had saved more than 5,500 watt-hours of electricity since its March debut.

In response to a page from my colleagues at WSJ.com’s Energy Roundup blog, I looked into the numbers. The federal Energy Star program, which encourages consumers to cut their energy consumption, had someone do a quick test for me and found that modern LCD computer monitors don’t see much benefit from a black screen.

Blackle is down today (because of high traffic from recent blog links, according to owner Toby Heap of Sydney, Australia). But the Google cache version of the site’s “about” page, which carries some white screen space from Google atop the black page, explains that the site was inspired by a post this past January on the blog ecoIron claiming that if Google went all-black, it could save 750 megawatt-hours a year (a megawatt-hour is one million watt-hours; you can convert these to each other and other energy units here). But as ecoIron noted, the savings are most likely to accrue from older CRT (cathode-ray tube) monitors, rather than the more-modern, more-compact, more-energy-efficient LCD (liquid crystal display) screens that have come to dominate the market (representing three quarters of all monitors world-wide as of last year, by some estimates).

On LCD displays, color may confer no benefit at all. In response to my inquiry, Steve Ryan, program manager for Energy Star’s power-management program, asked consulting firm Cadmus Group to run a quick test by loading Blackle, Google and the Web site of the New York Times (which is, like Google, mostly white on-screen) on two monitors — one CRT, one LCD — and connecting a power meter to both. “We found that the color on screen mattered very little to the energy color consumption of the LCD monitor,” said David Korn, principal at Cadmus, which specializes in energy and environment, and does work for the government. The changes were so slight as to be within the margin of error for the power meter. Tweaking brightness and contrast and settings had a bigger effect. The bulkier CRT screen did see savings with Blackle of between 5% and 20%. Mr. Korn emphasized that this was a quick test, not a rigorous study.

“Even if the energy savings are small, they are representative of the need for each of us to start taking small steps to save energy,” Blackle’s Dr. Heap (who holds a doctorate in exercise physiology) told me in an email. “My hope is that by setting Blackle as their home page people will be reminded of this need to save energy each time they go online.” Similar wording appears on Blackle’s “about” page.

Dr. Heap and his company, Heap Media, also stand to benefit from traffic to the site (assuming it comes back online). Blackle is part of the Google Co-op program, which means it shares in ad revenue from searches. A Google spokesman said, “Google is not affiliated with Blackle and we do not have any additional comments to provide at this time.”

Further reading: In a mock interview with himself, Mark Ontkush, whose blog post inspired Blackle, discussed the “shades of grey” on his black Google idea, including the potential for poor readability. Dr. Heap told me he has no plans for other colors, so someone else would have to found Greygle. Online Journal columnist Jason Fry recently measured power consumption of his home appliances for energy consumption and found that the big energy hogs were his lights and dryer.

Moscow tops Mercer's cost of living list; London is close behind

Moscow is the world’s most expensive city for expatriates for the second consecutive year, according to the latest Cost of Living Survey from Mercer Human Resource Consulting. London is in second position, climbing three places since last year. Seoul moves down one place in the ranking to take third place, followed by Tokyo in fourth. Asuncion in Paraguay is the least expensive city for the fifth year running.

Mercer's annual Cost of Living Survey covers 143 cities across six continents and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.* It is the world’s most comprehensive cost of living survey and is used to help multinational companies and governments determine compensation allowances for their expatriate employees.

Top 50 rankings

Europe, Middle East, Africa: Europe dominated the top 50, placing 30 cities on the list and capturing six of spots in the top ten. Strong currencies helped push most European cities higher for 2007.

Africa placed five cities in the top 50, with Douala, Cameroon on top with a rank of 24. Four of the African cities climbed in the rankings while Lagos, Nigeria dropped from 31 to 37.

Four cities in the Middle East were in the top 50 for 2007, lead by Tel Aviv, Israel in 17th place. Istanbul, Turkey took the biggest drop in the top 50, from 15th to 38th.

Asia: Eight Asian cities were on the top 50 list, led by Seoul, Korea in third place. The biggest mover was Taipei, Taiwan which dropped from 28th to 48th.

Americas: Only two US cities made the list (New York City at 15th and Los Angeles at 42nd) thanks to the weak US dollar. No Canadian or Latin American cities were in the top 50.

Australasia: Sydney was the lone representative in the top 50, placing 21st.

ZDNet Asia conducted a survey on the Internet between Aug. 25 and Nov. 6, 2006, to gain insights into Asia's IT workforce and salary trends. The survey drew 5,090 respondents from industry sectors such as government, healthcare, IT, services, telecommunications, legal and finance, across seven Asian countries: Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Among the findings: IT management skills are much-sought-after and command the highest renumeration, while the best-paying IT jobs are in Hong Kong, followed by Singapore.

路透聯合國電---一份聯合國報告周二稱，全球60歲及以上老人人口到2050年將成長近三倍，達20億，佔預計全球總人口92億的近四分之一。

聯合國經濟社會事務部人口處在2006年修訂版「世界人口展望」(World Population Prospects)中預測，未來43年內，全球人口將比現有的67億增加25億。

報告指出，全球人口正朝到2050年時超過90億的趨勢發展，因此還在繼續成長；但較發達地區的人口未來43年預料維持在12億，高齡化現象將非常顯著。大多數的人口增長以及年輕人預料來自較貧窮國家。

包括德國、義大利、日本、韓國以及大多數前蘇聯國家和幾個小島國等46國的人口，到2050年預計低於現有人口。

但是阿富汗、蒲隆地、剛果民主共和國、幾內亞比索、賴比瑞亞(利比里亞)、尼日(尼日爾)、東帝汶和烏干達的人口預計在未來40年中增加至三倍。

報告稱，至2050年全球新增的25億人口中，將有一半將來自印度、奈及利亞(尼日利亞)、巴基斯坦、剛果民主共和國、衣索比亞(埃塞俄比亞)、美國、孟加拉和中國。(完)
